It’s that time of year. School is out. The weather is warming up. Summer is within grasp. Happenings on and near the water on the Middle Peninsula are in full swing.

Tappahannock Farmers’ Market

Located in the center of historic downtown Tappahannock at the intersection of Cross Street and Prince Street

A local tradition for Tappahannock, Tappahannock Farmers’ Market runs every third Saturday from April to November. Vendor feature fresh produce, plants, arts and crafts, baked goods and music. It’s a tradition not to miss, and a perfect start to a weekend paddling on the Middle Peninsula. Consider starting your day at the market, and heading out later to the waters. Or visa versa. 2019 Mattaponi Madness Drag Boat Race

Rainbow Acres Campground, 514 James Road, King and Queen Courthouse, VA 23085

Virginia Outlaw Drag Boat Association (VODBA) presents the annual Mattaponi Madness Drag Boat Race at Rainbow Acres Campground. Come see the East Coast’s fastest drag boats and help raise funds for the Mattaponi Volunteer Rescue Squad. $15 at the gate. Kids 12 & younger free.

Chances are these boats ride the waves faster than you can paddle, but at least it will get you out exploring the Middle Peninsula in a new way.

Mathews Micro-Tri Series Event #1

8 to 10 am

Williams Wharf, 1039 Williams Wharf Road, Mathews, VA 23109

Swim. Bike. Run. Join Mathews County in their first of four-event series where you get a taste of a mini triathlon. The Micro-Tri distances are a ¼ mile swim, an 8-mile bike, and a 2-mile run all throughout Williams Wharf. Race day signup is available starting at 8 am. Participants must be at least 14 years old.

Oysters in Bag Chesapeake Bay York River Virginia

Oysters. We love them. We love to eat them. We love to use them as decorations. We love what they do for the Chesapeake Bay and as such we want to help keep their population steady.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) is holding a seminar at Dozier’s Marina & Yachting Center to teach participants how to help bring back this vital species by growing oysters along your dock. Gardeners will raise their oysters for one year than return them to CBF where they will plant them onto a sanctuary reef where they will be protected from harvest to grow, filter, and reproduce. YOU MUST REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT.

Music Under the Stars

Located at Taber Park, on the corner of Bonner Street and Rappahannock Ave.

Come start your summer listening to some good tunes under some beautiful stars. Jay Camacho will present at “Music Under the Stars,” a free summer concert series held in the charming Town of Urbanna. This family and pet friendly event kicks off at 7 pm. Coolers and picnic baskets permitted (please don’t bring glass).
