A new kayak/canoe launch is being constructed on the Great Wicomico River to extend your paddle!

At Glebe Point on the Great Wicomico River between Burgess and Wicomico Church off Route 200 is the Great Wicomico Fishing Pier, and new kayak launch. Near waterfront Horn Harbor Restaurant, this launch provides paddling access to quiet tributaries off the main stem of the Great Wicomico River.

For a long distance paddle, follow the river upstream to Bush Mill Stream Natural Area Preserve. The region is part of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ Virginia Birding & Wildlife Trail in the Coastal Region, Northern Neck Loop. The freshwater tidal marsh supports varieties of waterfowl and songbirds in all seasons and is accessible from the water. If you wish to beach the kayaks and stretch your legs, there are well-marked trails through the woods, one of which ends at an observation deck to enjoy the viewshed.

Other points of access along the Great Wicomico River include Cedar Point Landing, and Coopers Landing, both of which have limited parking, and are on the north shore of the Great Wicomico River.

If embarking on a long paddle, pick up lunch supplies at Jeff’s Country Market in Horsehead or bring a cooler and stop on the way home for sweet corn and hard crabs in season.
