Spend enough time on Virginia’s waterways and you start to notice things.

The quiet shift of the tide through a marsh creek. The flash of an osprey overhead. The way a stretch of river holds stories—of wildlife, working waterfronts and generations of people who have lived alongside the water.

For many paddlers, these moments are simply part of being outdoors.

For Virginia’s certified ecotour guides, they’re the beginning of a story.

In 2026, Virginia Water Trails is once again offering the Virginia Certified Ecotour Guide Course, an eight-week program designed to prepare outdoor enthusiasts, tourism professionals and community leaders to lead meaningful ecotour experiences across Virginia’s coastal waterways.

Turning Curiosity into Knowledge

Every great ecotour begins with curiosity.

Why do marsh grasses change with the seasons? What role do oyster reefs play in supporting marine life? How have rivers and creeks shaped the communities that depend on them?

The Ecotour Guide Course helps participants turn those questions into engaging experiences for visitors exploring Virginia’s waterways.

Through eight weeks of live online classes, participants learn about coastal ecology, wildlife, and the cultural heritage of Virginia’s water-dependent communities. The course also introduces the fundamentals of guiding—including interpretation skills, storytelling, customer experience and responsible tourism practices.

Guest speakers from across the region bring real-world perspectives from conservation, outdoor recreation and tourism.

Participants who complete the course and meet additional requirements, including CPR and First Aid certification, earn the designation of Virginia Certified Ecotour Guide, a credential valid for three years.

A Growing Community of Guides

Across Virginia’s coastal regions, certified ecotour guides are helping people experience the water in deeper ways.

Some lead kayaking trips through winding marsh creeks where herons hunt the shallows. Others guide visitors along tidal rivers rich with birdlife or introduce travelers to the traditions of coastal communities shaped by the water.

What they share is a commitment to helping people understand the landscapes they’re exploring.

In the hands of a knowledgeable guide, a simple paddle becomes something more — an opportunity to learn about wildlife, history and the ecosystems that define the Chesapeake Bay region.

Why Ecotourism Matters

Virginia’s rivers, marshes and bays form an interconnected network of habitats that support a remarkable diversity of wildlife. They also shape the culture and economy of the communities that border them.

Ecotourism offers a way to share these landscapes responsibly while encouraging stewardship and supporting local economies.

Programs like the Virginia Certified Ecotour Guide Course help ensure that those leading visitors on the water have the knowledge and skills to interpret these environments in ways that are both engaging and respectful of the ecosystems they depend on.
